Springtime at the Dome

Oil painting on canvas, created especially for First & Last, depicting Worthing seafront and our beloved cinema, The Dome, as seen from the beach.

Kathryn Matthews lives and works on Shoreham beach, with her studio just across from the sea. Here, she returns to her favourite beach walk from her studio to the old Fort on Shoreham Beach.

Framed in a bespoke, hand finished white wooden frame. Canvas is 30 x 30 cm. With frame, the picture is 33 x 33 cm.

About the artist.

Kathryn has always been known for her colourful palette and varied mark making. Her work has amassed a large following of collectors drawn to her exuberant use of colour, vivacious energy and variety of bold mark making techniques.

Studying at the Deva Art School, Holland before obtaining a BA (Hons) in Visual Art from De Montford University, Leicester (1990-1993) Kathryn worked as an archaeological illustrator in Spain before returning to England to establish herself as a professional artist. Throughout the early days of her career Kathryn worked as an etcher. Elements of this technique have remained consistent throughout her body of work to date through the combination of ink-black colour blocks and etched illustrative detailing.

Kathryn takes an experimental approach to her work, applying multiple layers of oils and glazes, vigorously stripping and reapplying the paint along with a variety of differing mark making techniques. Such processes imbue her paintings with striking luminosity and ethereal qualities.

Combining observation with an imaginative power, her extensive travels around the world significantly influence her work, transforming landscapes with riots of colour and exaggerated palettes.
